Water

Water is essential for life, therefore its essential that we use it wisely. Conserving and valuing water is easy and as water resources get more scarce we can save money and energy in the process.

The Gizmo Challenge - help save water

image

Did you know that every home that installs a simple flush limiting ‘gizmo’ in their toilet saves an average of 20,000 litres of water per year?

We’re asking all community groups in Waitakere to help their members install ‘gizmos’ in their toilets at home where possible.

Gizmo’s are a simple lead weight, and they can save you thousands of litres of water every year. They take less than a minute to install—very easy. All you need is the gizmo and a super-simple installation guide.

Water Saving Showerhead

Just changing your showerhead to a water efficient one like this Satin Jet, can reduce your shower flow by thousands of litres per year and still give you a great shower! Saves $$$ on your power bill too, 'cause you're using less hot water.

Flow Restrictors

Even simpler than a new showerhead, many showers can just have a flow restrictor installed. They cut down the flow and cut down the wasted money.

Rainwater Collection

This 4,420 litres (1,000 gallons) rain tank was installed at the Sustainable Living Centre. It supplies enough water for an average family for non-drinking outlets i.e. toilets, laundry, and water for the garden.

Grey Water Recycling

At the same time as maximising the water coming onto our properties it's important to think about the waste water going off them. Why should I recycle my grey water?
