EnviroSchools
Enviroschools is a national programme supported by councils across the country. Overall 25% of all schools in New Zealand are part of the Enviroschools network; over 700 schools. EcoMatters facilitates 13 of these Enviroschools in the West Auckland area.
The kaupapa of Enviroschools is about taking action for the well-being of the whole school, community, and eco-system. Communities are made up of people, plants, animals and the landscape that they all live in. Becoming more sustainable involves understanding and supporting the interconnections and interdependence between all living things in our community.

Update!!
Auckland Council hosted the 8th EnviroSchools Celebration Event on the 2nd December at Owairaka School.
The event celebrated the achievements of 18 schools participating in the EnviroSchools programme, that had completed a Bronze, Silver or Green-Gold Reflection in 2011.
Flanshaw Rd School, an EcoMatters facilitated EnviroSchool, celebrated becoming a Silver EnviroSchool and two secondary schools, supported by EcoMatters in the past, Waitakere College and Western Springs College, achieved a Bronze and Silver certificate respectiviely.
The day was also special as it marked the 10th birthday for the EnviroSchools Programme; in recognition of this landmark every school made a cake with a special message to create one big ‘mosaic cake’.
Senior students from Pakuranga College and Auckland Girls Grammar School were the MC's for the day and Councillor Wayne Walker and Peter Haynes, Chair of the Albert- Eden Local Board, presented the certificates.
The day began with a moving powhiri from Owairaka School and then performances from Otahuhu Intermediate and Newmarket School.
Tours around Owairaka School to honor the Enviroschools Kaupapa of empowered students. Tours around OwairakaSchool including seeing their new Fale followed by a healthy lunch completed the day where everyone admitted they were inspired to continue to strive for environmental change!
