Transport at school

How can your school make a difference when it comes to transport?

Providing a safe environment for our kids is paramount - so whether they ride to school, join a walking bus or become streetwise rangers it must be fun and safe as well as sustainable.

Walking school bus

The walking school bus is a fun, safe and active way for children to travel to and from school with adult supervision. Each bus walks along a set route with at least one adult 'driver', picking children up at designated stops and walking them to school. The process is reversed in the afternoon. This not only reduces the traffic chaos that often erupts at the school gate at those times but creates a safer and closer community. There's no need to reinvent the wheel - all the tools are provided to start your school bus today. Resource kits are available through Roadsafe or TravelWise.

Bike buddy

Team up with a friend, check that your bike is up to scratch, learn a few tips and tricks, plot a safe route and get to school under your own peddle power. The Bike Buddies programme is a great way to become cycle smart and have fun with your mates, it also provides plenty of resources and support to get you on your bike.

Carpool or rideshare

How many kids in your neighbourhood are being driven to the same school? What about carpooling or ridesharing for school drop offs and pick ups instead of all travelling individually? A strong school and community foster sustainable behaviour. Organising shared transport can help connect parents in the neighbourhood - all steps in the right direction towards creating a strong community.
