Grey Water Recycling

in

At the same time as maximising the water coming onto our properties it's important to think about the waste water going off them. As they say, there is no such thing as "waste", just misplaced resources. Greywater systems turn 'wastewater' and its nutrients into useful resources. Why flush the toilet or irrigate your garden with drinking water?

Why should I recycle my grey water?

Reducing the amount of potable water (drinking water) you use means:

  • a reduction in your water rates - this saves you money.
  • a reduction in overall town water consumption which means there is less pressure on the environment to provide a clean, fresh supply of water.
  • less strain on treatment plants and septic tanks
  • improved groundwater recharge when used for irrigation.
  • an improvement in plant growth.

However, it is important to consider the type of detergents and cleaning products you use when using greywater to irrigate your garden. Due to the varying use of chemicals in these products they may be harmful to your plants.

Please note:

If considering installing a greywater recycling system, first check with your local council if any consents are required. Check with ARC on their regulations.
