SUMMARY:Food Forest Our Public Parks! A Community Design Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed.  \nNew date: Sunday 7 June 2026 (previously Sunday 12 April) \nFood forests are a growing trend worldwide\, celebrated for weaving together ecological restoration\, community engagement\, and local food production. \nThis workshop asks a simple question: Can we grow more food in public parks?\nWe say yes! \nJoin us for a two-part session exploring how communities can design productive\, regenerative public spaces. \n\nWorkshop Outline \nPart 1: Presentation by Dan on the core principles behind syntropic agroforestry – one promising approach for establishing food forests. \nAfternoon tea – 20 mins \nPart 2: \nBreak into small groups to apply these principles to Olympic Park. \nThis hands-on design exercise will explore plant layering\, complementary edible species\, access and pathways\, water considerations\, public engagement\, and more. \nIf your local park had a food forest\, what would it include? \n \nThis event is part of EcoFest 2026 — a month-long\, community-powered festival celebrating nature\, sustainable living and everyday climate action across Tāmaki Makaurau. Discover practical ideas\, inspiring events and ways to deepen your learning at ecofest.org.nz.

SUMMARY:Matariki Planting at Te Kōtuitanga
DESCRIPTION:Come along for a community planting along the Waitahurangi Awa at Te Kōtuitanga (Olympic Park)\, New Lynn. This year\, we celebrate Matariki through the theme Matariki herenga waka – a time to come together as a community\, honouring our shared connections to place\, people\, and the environment. \nAs we plant along the awa\, we reflect on Matariki as a time of renewal – remembering the past\, celebrating the present\, and preparing for the year ahead. Together\, we’ll contribute to a healthier stream and a more resilient neighbourhood. \nThe native plants we put into the ground will help stabilise stream banks\, slow water flow during heavy rain\, reduce flood impacts\, and provide habitat for native wildlife. \nAll ages are welcome; however\, children must be supported by an adult. Please wear sturdy closed-toe footwear\, ideally gumboots. \nMeet at EcoMatters Environment Trust\, 1 Olympic Place\, New Lynn. \nHosted by EcoMatters Environment Trust. For further info\, contact pamela@ecomatters.org.nz \nNgā mihi to Whau Local Board for their support.
